Prime Video’s prequel series of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings will debut this year, rather than next, which was initially thought to be when the show would be ready for streaming. But thanks to the work of wizards and friends, it will be seen later this summer instead.
The biggest budget project in Prime Video’s history, the series has been a smash hit for them through the two seasons so far, enjoying over 170 million viewers worldwide and a huge part of the big push for membership sign-ups since its debut.
The second season aired in October 2024, marking a two-year gap between seasons, and it seems that legacy will continue when the third season airs. The show is based on Tolkien’s The War of the Elves, which occurs before the clash seen in the prologue of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films, known as the War of the Last Alliance.
Charlie Vickers (Sauron), Morfydd Clark (Galadriel) and BAFTA Winner Robert Aramayo (Elrond) return for the new series, joined by newcomers Jamie Campbell Bower (Stranger Things) and Eddie Marsan (Clayface). Andrew Richardson, Zubin Varla and Adam Young are also part of the cast.
Synopsis:
“Jumping forward several years from the events of season two, season three takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.”
While no specific official release date has been confirmed, don’t be surprised if the new season doesn’t drop at a similar time in early autumn like its predecessors.
